It is with deepest sadness that we share the loss of our colleague and friend, Patrick Hinson, who passed away last month.
Patrick had worked with NEBT in the roles of Ballet Master and Interim Company Manager since 2019. Not only did our dancers greatly benefit from his vast experience as a dancer, teacher and mentor as well as from his in-depth knowledge of ballet repertoire.
We all miss his friendliness, humour and warmth, which he unfailingly brought to every meeting and rehearsal.
Patrick became involved in the world of dance at the age of 7, and worked extensively in North America, Europe, and Asia as a professional dancer, ballet master and in various management roles.
After his training at the University of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and Dance he joined the Cincinnati Ballet Company and was later invited to join the New York City Ballet under George Balanchine, aged 17. In 1981 Patrick joined American Ballet Theater under the directorship of Mikhail Baryshnikov and returned to New York City Ballet in 1983. Several choreographers created work on him, including William Forsythe, Lar Lubovitch, Jerome Robbins, and Twyla Tharpe.
Patrick retired from New York City Ballet in 1990 and from then on worked in numerous positions as ballet master and teacher as well as in artistic and administrative management. Companies and organisations include, among many others, Hartford Ballet, Icelandic National Ballet, Ballet Ulm, Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Elmhurst School for Dance, Butler University, Ballet Arizona, Connecticut Ballet, English National Ballet, Compañía Nacional de Danza, Tanztheater der Komischen Oper Berlin, Culberg Ballet, Nederlands Dans Theater, Royal Swedish Ballet, Slovak National Theatre Ballet, Bratislava, Polish National Ballet, Aalto Ballett Theater Essen and New English Ballet Theatre.
Patrick and his phenomenal energy and commitment will be greatly missed.
